New research has today (November 1st) revealed what parents say is the real-life impact of screen time on their children – making many behave badly, be harder to get on with and in some cases even affecting their exam results.

Nearly 40% (39.4) of parents say their children’s behaviour gets worse after time in front of a screen. More than three in five (63%) parents say this change happens after less than two hours. It’s so bad for some families that one in four (26%) say it’s had an effect on their children’s exam results.

And it’s not just screen time that’s making life harder for families – with more than half (55%) saying their child’s behaviour changes depending on their diet. 67% of parents told researchers a good diet was as important as a good night’s sleep. And a massive 83% agree that kids behave better if they’ve been active rather than having screen time.

The study has been carried out on behalf of home appliance brand Beko as part of its  Eat Like A Pro initiative – a global campaign to inspire children to make healthier food choices and for families to cook together.

Ex-England footballer Jermaine Jenas surprised children at Hollymount Primary School in Wimbledon after they won a competition launched as part of the initiative. The Match of the Day pundit rolled up his sleeves and joined in with the children’s fitness session.

In-line with the brand’s mission to inspire families, Hollymount Primary School took part in a national contest to find a school that inspires children to lead active and healthy lifestyles.

Crowned the winners, the school’s entry detailed how pupils are encouraged to do a ‘mile a day challenge’ together three days a week, all before nine o’clock.

  • More than half (55%) of parents say their child’s behaviour changes dependant on their diet.
  • Worst foods for causing bad behaviour as rated by parents are sweets (62%), fizzy drinks (59%), chocolates (47%), energy drinks (39%) and crisps (21%).
  • More than two thirds (67%) say a good diet is as important as a night’s sleep.
